我諗趁仲有少少黃昏青春挑戰下自己嘛, 到時真係未練到咪下年黎過囉
ahchung兄, 小弟十分之喜歡你的running philosophy!
Anyway, don’t be discouraged! Your goal is absolutely doable! 如果你有跑步底子 (even just a little) you should be able to train and be ready for your 1st marathon in 18 weeks of time. Of course I am talking about following a training plan. Most popular marathon training plans (eg: Galloway, Higdon, FIRST.....etc) are only 18 to 20 weeks long. All you need to put in are your time, effort, determination and courage. I have seen so many beginning runners (couch potatoes ~ 所謂嘅大食懶) started off training and ready for a marathon in just 6 months. But remember, time should not be your goal for your 1st marathon. You goal is to complete the 26.2 miles within the time allowed. I have also seen so many 1st time marathon runners stressed out before the race because they are so concerned about their time. Don’t do that!! Just go out there and enjoy the 26.2 miles of running that you trained hard for.
May I recommend a couple of good reference books for 1st time marathon runners?
- The Competitive runner’s handbook by Bob Glover & Shelly-lynn Florence Glover (the bestselling guide to running 5Ks through marathons.)
- Galloway’s Book on Running (2nd edition) by Jeff Galloway – This book has sold over 400,000 copies since 1984.
I followed his training plan when I trained for my 1st marathon back in 1991.
As for running in the summer. I try not to use the treadmill (dreadmill). I once did 18 miles (30km) on it and I hated every minute of it. I live in the desert, the summer heat is unbearable here, temperature usually around 40C to 50C. I go out very very early in the morning to run and come back inside before the sun comes up.
SCM is still more than 9 months away. I hope you enjoy your marathon training and good luck on your 1st marathon next year. It is fun afterall!
