As a beginner, I've found this book good for anyone who want some basic guide:
"5k and 10k Training" by Brian Clarke, Human Kinetics
It is a book employing energy-effort idea to get rid of the complicated ideas like CO2max. I followed Brian's guide and was able to build myself a training plan that suit me well. But I have to say I am not preparing for a race in a near future nor I want to raise myself into the elite group. I am running for healthy only. This book is useful for beginners.
