Actually I don't think a gel can provide enough energy for a 45 minute-run.
For example, a GU gel gives you 100kcal and running for around 10-15 minutes (depends on speed and body weigth) can already burn all 100kcal.
It is impossible to compensate ALL the energy expenditure during FM race. However, energy gel can compensate at least some of the energy (and electrolyte) expenditure and provide caffeine to maintain your performance. Also it is easy to be digested and absorbed by our body.
Besides, I conside the gel as a small small gift to reward myself for running such a long distance. This makes me less painful mentally especially during the last 10k of the race. |
